Tips for Installing Replacement windows in your home or office.
Properly replacing the windows in your how, does take a bit of skill. If you are handy and willing to try, these tips can help you in your efforts.
Your first step will be to tape the measurement of the window. Take your tape measure or yard stick and measure properly. The correct way to measure is it is brick take your tape measure and measure the interior portion of the cut brick. The window area that you are working on may be vinyl or made of wood. In this case you would measure from the inside of the window. Use these measurements to help you when ordering your new windows online.
Before you start your project make sure that you have a measuring tape or yard stick, screwdriver, screw gun, pry bar, hammer, silicone, reciprocating saw, and caulk.
Your next step will be to take out the window currently in your home or office. Use a razor knife to cut away at the caulk on the outer corners of the window. This will work if the flange is nailed to your home. Take off the glass and separate the window from the wall with a pry bar. Cut the window in the center of the frame using a reciprocating saw. Next you will use the pry bar to pry the window off. In the event there is not any flange take out the screws located in back of the rubber or plastic support strip then rake out the window. Use your shop vacuum to thoroughly clean the area.
Plum then make sure the window is level in the interior of the window space. Tightly screw in each sharp corner until the window is level. If you need additional help use shims. The window that you put in should be secure. Open and close the window, to make sure it is operational. Use silicone outside of the widow to outline the brick, housing siding, or any surface that you can not paint. The surface encasing the brick may be paint-able, if it is use painters caulk or you can try a paint-able silicone product.
Continue to caulk on the interior of the window and surrounding the drywall. If there is a large space, you may need to place trim or use drywall to fill in this space. When adding dry wall to the interior of the building you need to use corner bead. Next you need to then screw or nail in the corner bead. Use a coating of drywall mad or dura bond that is time sensitive to completely fill in the corner bead. Let this solution dry before you sand the wall. Paint over the area as many times as you need to to achieve a polished look.
