Furniture Layout
Knowing the exact size of your living space in a room, can help you to quickly establish a furniture layout. You can use this exercise to help you change the design using your current furniture or with new furniture that you will be purchasing.
First start with a clean sheet of paper, preferably with no lines if possible. Draw a rough plan of your room. Use a ruler to achieve a neat outcome. Write down all of the architectural details built into the house. Such as the fire place, stairs, and columns.
Draw the doors and windows, and include the direction and space needed for doors to open and close.
Think about how you would navigate the room. How many ways could you easily enter through the door and get to the other side of the room. These lines or path ways, visually show you the space needed. This will help you to see how many different ways you can place your furniture and still have room to walk comfortably.
If you still feel stuck, ask someone else to do the same exercise with you. Another point of view will result in different results. This can be tried in any room of your home. A change in furniture layout can help in small spaces, awkward spaces, bedrooms, or living areas. Changing the furniture layout can also help a room to serve more than one purpose.
